We are truly becoming a distributed organization – with 35 designers spread out over 23 cities across 8 different countries — there’s almost always a Liferay designer online.
This year we took our remote workshops to the next level — internally and with our customers!
Feedback, brainstorming, critiques — it goes by many names but the spirit is the same – help each other improve as designers.

Not everything was online — we were able to (finally) meet in person a few times in 2021 to share meals and co-work!
Remote first means rethinking the way we work. Operations took a front seat in 2021 and has since been kicking down silos, evaluating workflows, and enabling Liferay designers to do the best work of their careers.
Thanks to new tools & improved processes, experienced designers & fresh perspectives, and our collective dedication to our craft, we produced our best work yet in 2021.
Objects, our low-code approach for capturing users data, allow businesses do to much more than they could before. Now, companies will be able to create their own applications, centralize all data in their Liferay installation and increase the potential use of this data within Liferay. Captured data can be published as a regular Liferay application, where you can create your own layouts, or even connect that data to a fragment and populate it in a site.
Liferay DXP is an incredibly flexible product, so it’s only fair that our analytics tool can support our wide variety of customer use cases. Custom events and events analysis finally makes its debut in 2021 after countless interviews, tests, and iterations.
The Organizations Chart is a revamp of a feature introduced this year that allows our customers to manage and configure their organization (Organizations, Accounts and Users) in a simple and intuitive way.
Our new migration guide provides a detailed step-by-step walkthrough for migrating from on-premise DXP installations to our cloud infrastructure. Coupled with our outstanding support service, migrations are closer than ever before to being a seamless, integrated experience.
Lexicon is a design language that provides a common framework for building interfaces within the Liferay product ecosystem. It is a guide to foundations, components, patterns, and use cases that provide consistency and coherence to these products, and ultimately, a satisfactory and unified experience for its users.
Dialect is a flexible Figma component library built to reduce the time & overhead of new Solutions projects by reducing the redundant work of building out components mapped to design tokens. We’ve had a ton of value in reusing our library in over 12 projects this year. Check out the Community file!
All of us have benefitted from others — writing and sharing our experiences and knowledge is just one small way that we can give back to the design community.
We miss the days when conferences meant being in-person and meeting new people. We did, however, host viewing parties in 2021. Not-surprisingly, we’ve had appearances from many Liferay Design Alumni!

2021 had its fill of challenges — we did our best to focus on the positives.
As the only constant seems to be change — we’ve focused on flexibility and work-life-balance.
One of the highlights from this year has been an expanded pool for talent, as we shifted to remote-first. Because of this, we’ve been able to build an even more global team.
Another positive is that six (a new record!) designers took advantage of our parental leave program this year to bond with the newest additions to their families.
I’m incredibly proud of our team for persevering, adapting, and finding new ways to grow this year!
